Vineyard Photography

This portfolio is a selection of images which I have taken in wine country showcasing the various works I’ve done. Mostly centered in the Constantia Valley (specifically Groot Constantia Wine Estate) all my winelands photography is from the Cape Winelands of South Africa. I have photographed in all conditions, in all seasons and really enjoy hiking onto the mountain slopes surrounding the farms to get an overview of the landscapes. First light through the autumn vines has to right at the top for prime conditions to capture beauty in the vineyards.

On the estates I have photographed sunrise across the vineyards, sunsets, the architecture, portraits, the wine, harvests and of course the grape vines themselves. I have recently been selected to have one of my images exhibited at la Vieille Charité in Marseille, France as part of the Terroirs d’Images 2019 (International Grape & Wine Photo Exhibit) – a big honour!

Vineyard Photography - Justin Hawthorne - Winter to Spring New Life

‘New Life’ in the vineyards during the winter months at Groot Constantia shows a different side to an estate. We get so accustomed to seeing vineyards at their prime: green foliage with bunches of grapes hanging from them in the summer months, and then of course the autumn foliage. However, during the wet winter months and early spring the vineyards show beauty in simple details and new life.

A classic summer day in wine country: roses, blazing sunshine and bright green foliage.

Vineyard Photography - Justin Hawthorne Spiders web at sunrise

Early morning sunlight hits a spiderweb in the vineyards as the leaves turn their autumn browns. I love the photographing the vineyards during the autumn months, especially just after sunrise when the golden light hits the foliage.

Buitenverwachting in the Constantia Valley has one of the most picturesque drives to the tasting room, passing this gorgeous view along the way.

Sunrise over the Cape Flats from the high lying vineyards in Constantia. Gorgeous autumn colours make this photograph one of my personal favourites.

Winter simplicity in the vineyards as the cold season crops add a splash of colour to the bare vines.

Vineyard Photography - Justin Hawthorne - Autumn Sunrise

A cloudy autumn morning prevents sunlight from hitting the foliage, however colours in the vineyard do just enough to still get the scene coming to life.

Groot Constantia - J Hawthorne - Mar 18 - 09

I have experienced a few days during harvest season, witnessing the skills and efficiency which the staff take grape from vine to cellar.
